Denon CEOL RCD-N7

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Denon CEOL RCD-N7The Denon CEOL RCD-N7 is an AirPlay-capable hi-fi that can be used with an iPhone, iPod or iPad.

The CEOL has a CD player and radio tuner.   Speakers are optional and inexpensive (£70), with quality that you would expect from speakers of that price range.

If you install Airplay, which costs an extra £40, and have your CEOL connected to a network, you will see the CEOL RCD-N7 in your iTunes window, and you will be able to stream music to it.

You can also move music from your IPad, iPhone or iPod to your CEOL using the Denon Remote App. If you are not using the App, the display on the CEOL itself is very clear.

The quality of streamed music is equivalent to that of music played directly from the CD player.

The CEOL allows for USB input. There is also an integrated iPod dock, unplug and play Wi-Fi, and Ethernet networking, for hooking up to a router.

Pump-action Screwdriver

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

auto-select screwdriver

This is an all new design of screwdriver is a DIY revolution. Just like other multi-head screwdrivers you only need to carry one. But with this screwdriver you don’t have to fiddle around with all the iddy biddy heads, dropping them on the floor, behind the sofa or losing them in your toolbox.

The pump-action mechanism selects the different heads from inside the screwdriver, which is where they stay. No messing around changing heads, relying on weak magnets and failing ball bearings to hold them in place.

Just twiddle the 6-in-1 Autoloader and get screwing. Job done.

Sound Asleep Pillow

Sound Asleep Pillow

If you want to listen to music in bed without anyone else hearing it the only option was to use headphones, until now.

The Sound Asleep Pillow allows you to connect your iPod, mp3 player, TV or pretty much any sound device and you can only hear them with your head on the pillow.

The advantage of the pillow over headphones is greater comfort; you can lay any way you like to hear your favourite bedtime tunes or sounds. With headphone the only option is to lay on your back, unless you want them uncomfortably sticking in your ears or against the side of your head.

The Sound Asleep Pillow comes in standard fluffy pillow or memory foam pillow.

JPL Ultra 2000 Compact Ultrasonic Cleaner

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

ultrasonic-cleanerGadgetThe JPL Ultra 2000 Compact Ultrasonic Cleaner is a special non-abrasive cleaner for jewellery, gold chains, spectacles and sunglasses etc.

It’s very easy to use, simply pop in your necklace or gold chain etc, close the lid, switch it on and off it goes.

It will clean most items perfectly with plain water, but you can also buy the special JPL Ultrasonic Cleaning Solution for antiques and really old items that have a lot of dirt on them.

This gadget is perfect for cleaning small fashion accessories like earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets and so on, as well as properly de-smudging your glasses and sunglasses.

The JPL Ultra 2000 uses ultra-high-frequency (UHF) sound waves to get all the dirt from the tiny pits and groves in all kinds of metals, plastics and glass to leave your items gleaming like new.

It’s also a very useful gadget if you’re considering selling some of your jewellery or old gold, [or even considering shining up some cheap charity shop bargains then flogging them on eBay, ed].

Firewinder Wind Powered Garden Lights

Monday, July 19th, 2010

firewinderGadgetIf you’ve visited a DIY store or two recently you may have noticed a growing trend in self-powered garden lighting, pathway outliners, fairy-lights and tree lights etc.

It’s the latest ‘in thing’ for your night-time soirees and barbeques. However, most of the lights you’ll see are solar powered, charging their batteries during the day and switching on their lights when it gets dark. Which is brilliant, of course, but they do run down eventually and they can get a bit dull to look at after a while…

So that’s where these amazing Firewinder lights come into their own. You hang them off tree branches, posts or whever you like and the wind makes them spin around, which genertes electricity and makes an array of LED bulbs glow in a swirling pattern – day or night – pretty much forever so long as there’s at least a breeze.

The effect is pretty awesome, we’ve had a bunch of them at two parties so far and they always get people talking – especially when you tell them how it works.

Premier Popcorn Maker by Giles & Posner

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Popcorn MakerGadgetThis nice little gadget caught my eye the other day so I gave it a try while watching The Book of Eli on blu ray at the weekend, which is a pretty awesome film by the way.

Anyway it works really well, just pop in your raw popcorn, wait a minute or so and you have tonnes of perfect popcorn with virtually no un-popped corns at all.

It’s also not that noisy, so if you’re a  bit of a slacker like me (see self-stirring coffee mug below) you can have the popcorn maker near the TV, in my case in the dedicated TV room, and just sit there making the stuff as you watch.

Bladeless Fan

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

bladeless fan reviewGadgetSo, I was in Comet yesterday and saw this crazy-looking device like something from Dune or Star Wars, blowing air at me with no visible means of doing so. Obviously I went and bought it right away.

The fan is made by Dyson, of bag-less vacuum cleaner fame, and sucks air into the base unit then squeezes it out through a thin aperture around the 12 inch rim. This high-pressure airflow drags more air with it, increasing the air volume by six times.

I could go on, bla bla bla, about all sorts of other specs like the fact the air is a continuous flow, and not a kind of whoosh whoosh wave like you get from a normal fan, but the main attraction for me is the magical feeling it projects. As soon as people see there’s no bladed they start sticking their hand through the loop, then feeling all around to see where the air is coming from.

Still, you have to be a bit of a gadget connoisseur to go for this, it’s pretty expensive for a fan.
